It began with a simple case of hiccups… It turned into our worst nightmare.
We are two sisters whose Dad was diagnosed with stage three Esophageal Cancer in January 2013. The last nine months have been an emotional roller coaster. We have watched his condition deteriorate to the extent that he could barely swallow water, seen him almost cut in half and celebrated with him as he enjoyed his first favourite Pret Sandwich after 4 months on a liquid diet!
He has endured horrific treatments and brutal surgery without a single moment of self-pity or a word of complaint.
He is our inspiration. His positivity is contagious and has already touched so many people. Especially us! Despite everything he’s been through – he’s still tougher than we are!
Powerless, we have watched him suffer, watched him fight. He is still fighting and we are still watching. But, we don’t want to feel powerless anymore. We have made a promise to ourselves that we will do everything we can to ensure that others do not have to suffer in this way and better treatments are developed as soon as possible. We aren’t medics, but we hope we can do something… We can use our love of the outdoors, adventure and physical challenges to raise awareness and much needed funds. Increased awareness of this disease will go some way to enabling doctors to detect it early, but more research is essential to ensure that cancer becomes routinely curable and the methods of doing so are more humane.
We have set ourselves a mission and a target and we are determined. We hope that this site will provide useful information and a platform for people to share their stories and experiences.
As Clint Eastwood (Our Dad’s hero) says: “You Improvise. You adapt. You Overcome“.
After all “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s size of the fight in the dog”, which is pretty lucky given that our Dad has lost a fair amount of weight!
